Agreeing to these terms

These Terms of Service govern your use of the Splitnest mobile app, website and related services. By creating an account or using Splitnest you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Please also read our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your information.

What Splitnest is

Splitnest is a shared-expense ledger. You and other people record expenses, say who paid and who owes a share, and Splitnest keeps a running net balance between each pair of people, per currency.

Splitnest is a record-keeping tool. It does not hold, transfer or process money, and it is not a bank, a payment service or a financial adviser. A settle-up payment is only an entry in the ledger; any real payment happens outside Splitnest.

Your account

You must provide accurate information, keep your password safe and tell us promptly if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for the activity under your account.

You may add other people to expenses by email address or phone number before they have signed up. Only add people you have a genuine reason to share costs with.

Expenses, balances and groups

You are responsible for the expenses you add. Each expense must add up: the amounts paid must equal the amounts owed, and Splitnest rejects anything that does not. When an amount does not divide evenly, the leftover minor units are given out one at a time in list order.

Balances are calculated by Splitnest from the expenses recorded, in the currency of each expense. Converting a balance to another currency uses that day's cached exchange rate, which is shown to you and can be undone.

Inside a group every member has equal rights: any member can add, edit or delete any expense in it. Changes are written to the Activity log, which is how members keep each other accountable. A member cannot leave or be removed from a group while their balance in it is not zero.

Deleted expenses and groups can be restored. Where two people edit the same expense at once, the last change wins and the previous version is kept in the Activity log.

Settling up

Recording a payment tells everyone involved that you consider a balance paid. Only record a payment when it has really been made. Splitnest cannot confirm or enforce payments between people, and any dispute is between you and the other person.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use Splitnest to break the law, harass or deceive others, add false or misleading expenses, send spam, upload content you have no right to share, try to access other people's accounts or data, interfere with the service or its security, or copy or reverse engineer it except where the law allows.

Comments and expenses are visible to the people you share them with, so keep them respectful. We may remove content that breaks these terms.

Your content

You keep ownership of the content you add to Splitnest. You give us permission to store it, process it and show it to the people you share it with, only so that we can run the service for you.

Free to use

Splitnest is free for everyone. There is no subscription, no paywall and no ads. Your mobile carrier or internet provider may charge for data use.

Linked cards

Linking a card is optional and lets you choose purchases to split. You authorise us to read the purchases made on a card you link, only for that purpose. You can remove a linked card at any time.

Availability and changes

We work to keep Splitnest available and accurate, but we do not promise that it will always be uninterrupted or free of errors. We may add, change or remove features, and we may update these terms. When we make a significant change we will tell you in the app or by email, and using Splitnest after that means you accept the updated terms.

Suspending or ending your account

You can stop using Splitnest at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or end an account that breaks these terms or puts other users or the service at risk.

Expenses you shared with others stay in their ledgers after your account is deleted, so that their balances remain correct, and your name is shown to them as "Deleted user".

Disclaimer and limit of liability

Splitnest is provided "as is" and "as available". We are not responsible for what other users record, for payments or agreements between users, or for losses that come from relying on balances that were entered incorrectly.

To the extent the law allows, Splitnest and its team are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have by law that cannot be limited.
