About Splitnest

Splitnest is a shared-expense ledger for friends and groups. Every expense records who paid and who owes a share, and the app keeps a running balance between you and each person you share costs with.

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Splitnest collects, why we collect it and the choices you have. It applies to the Splitnest mobile app, the Splitnest website and the services behind them.

Information you give us

Account details: your name, your email address or phone number, a password (stored only as a one-way hash) and your default currency. If you sign in with a social account, we receive the identifier and basic profile details that account shares with us.

Ledger content: the friends and groups you create, the expenses you add (description, amount, currency, date, category, who paid and who owes a share), settle-up payments, comments, and any receipt details you enter or scan to assign items to people.

Photos: a profile picture or receipt image you choose to upload. Files are stored separately from our database, and private files are only available through short-lived links.

Support messages: anything you send to us through the app, together with the app version and platform so we can help you.

Information collected automatically

Device details: if you turn on notifications, we store a push token and your device platform so we can deliver them.

Activity log: every expense you add, edit, delete, comment on or settle is recorded in an append-only Activity log that the people involved can see. This is how everyone in a group can trust the ledger.

Technical data: our servers process standard request information, such as your IP address, so we can keep the service secure, limit abuse and fix errors.

Contacts and invitations

You can add a friend by email address or phone number before they have signed up. That person appears as an invited user on the expenses you share, and their entry becomes a normal account if they later sign up with the same email address or phone number.

If you choose to find friends from your phone contacts, matching uses hashed email addresses and phone numbers computed on your device, so we can compare them without receiving your address book.

Linked cards

Linking a card is optional. If you link one, we receive its label, its last four digits and the purchases you can choose to split. Connection tokens are encrypted at rest and are never written to logs.

You can remove a linked card at any time, and you can dismiss any purchase you do not want to split.

How we use your information

To run the service: create your account, calculate balances, show your expenses and groups to the right people, send invitations and deliver the notifications you have asked for.

To keep Splitnest safe and working: prevent fraud and abuse, secure accounts, diagnose problems and answer support requests.

We do not sell your personal information, we do not show ads and we do not use your information for advertising. Splitnest is free for everyone, with no subscription or paywall.

Who can see your information

Other users: people you share an expense or group with can see the expense, its amounts, who paid, who owes a share, comments and related Activity. Members of a group can see that group's expenses. Friends see your name and the details you choose to share.

Service providers: we use infrastructure providers to host the service, store files and send notifications and emails on our behalf. They may only use your information to provide those services to us.

The Splitnest team: authorised team members can access account, group and support information through an admin panel to help users and handle abuse. Every admin action is recorded in an audit log.

Legal reasons: we may disclose information if the law requires it or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and of Splitnest.

Money and payments

Splitnest records who owes whom. No real money moves through Splitnest: a settle-up payment is an entry in the ledger that you and the other person agree has been paid outside the app. We never ask for your bank or card credentials in order to record a payment.

Keeping information safe

Access to the service is protected by short-lived access tokens and refresh tokens, and the app keeps them in the secure storage of your device.

No system is completely secure, so please choose a strong, unique password and tell us straight away if you think your account has been misused.

Keeping and deleting information

Because expenses involve more than one person, deleting your account does not remove the expenses you shared with others. Your share on those expenses is kept so that everyone's balances stay correct, and your name is shown to them as "Deleted user".

Deleted expenses and groups are first marked as deleted so that they can be restored.

You can ask us to correct or delete your personal information, or to give you a copy of it, through the Support page. We will respond as soon as we reasonably can.

Your choices

You can change your name, picture, default currency and notification preferences in the app, turn push notifications off in your device settings, remove linked cards, and leave a group once your balance in it is settled.

Children

Splitnest is not meant for children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Splitnest changes. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email.
